The Chinese are vivid examples of a group discriminated against just because of who they are in the late 1800s. The Chinese have struggled against oppression in the U.S and stuck had together to become a vibrant community today. They’ve been oppressed by the government and its people in many ways. They had laws passed against them and massacres planned for them. Even though the odds are against them, they still stuck together while they struggled through the discrimination and oppression. They have become a vibrant community by forming a company called The Chinese Six Company. With the Chinese Six Company, the white mobs and angry strikers would stop the rioting and immigrants could come in safely.

One way the Chinese were discriminated was that the government passed laws only aimed at the Chinese. There was the Chinese Exclusion Act was enacted so there would be no more Chinese immigrants coming to America so they wouldn’t have the chance to experience the opportunities here in America. There was a law that had forbidden any wooden Laundromats and buildings. “Between 1882 and the passage of the National Origins Law in 1924 (which no longer allowed Chinese, even if citizens, to bring in wives and children born in China), additional laws were passed that further limited Chinese immigration and restricted the rights of Chinese living in the United States.” Said by Carnes Jim in the story “A Rumbling in the Mines.” If anyone owned a wooden building, the punishment would be time in jail. Many of the Chinese had owned wooden Laundromats; therefore, a lot of the Chinese went to jail. The whites’ poor excuse for forbidding any wooden Laundromats was because they didn’t want buildings to catch on fire. They really didn’t want the Chinese to make money and instead wanted them to live very poorly. The Geary Act was another law that was enforced so if a police officer had seen a Chinese person in America out of his/her tenement without their residents’ certificate, they would be sent back to their home country. The police officer could just easily rip the Chinese person’s certificate and wouldn’t get in trouble because the Chinese needed the certificate in order to go to trial.

White Devils haunt Chinese lives when they burn their houses and lynch the Chinese. Their oppressive acts have gone far into breaking into Chinese houses when they were drunk and would wear mask to scare the Asians. Laurence Yep (1975) demonstrates the attacks of the Devils when ~{!0~}The demons are all getting drunk and getting ready for beating up Tang men. (pg.29)~{!1~} Yep implies that the motive of the whites were clear. ~{!0~}They wanted to burn and loot and hurt. Looking into that huge mass of faces was like looking into the ugliest depths of the human soul. (pg. 29-30)~{!1~}. Yep shows an example of the ugliest depths of America when ~{!0~}My own grandfather had been lynched about thirty years before by a mob of white demons almost the moment he has set foot on their shores. (pg.1)~{!1~} An example of the lynching and rioting because of Labor gluts was what Carnes (1995) describes when ~{!0~}Most fled with no more possessions than the thin cotton work suits on their back. The rioters stole any visible jewelry or other valuables and beat or shot or released the owners as they saw fit. (pg.55)~{!1~} this was the result of when ~{!0~}The rioters smashed windows, rammed doors and herded the frightened residents into the streets, showing little mercy for women or children.(pg. 54)~{!1~} Even those who were not involved in the labor shortage took part. ~{!0~}Dr. Edward Murray, a local physician charged to and fro on horseback shouting ~{!.~}shoot them down! (pg.55)~{!/!1~}

Other than laws and acts that were against the Chinese immigrants, Whites and other race of people also took advantages of the Chinese immigrants. The Chinese were paid in low wages and worked for extra hours just because they were Chinese immigrants. They also can¡¦t have an actual funeral if they died because of their job. The whites also discriminated, hurt, and even killed the Chinese immigrants just because of who they are. In addition, the Chinese immigrants don¡¦t have the right of habeas corpus, which made them ¡§could not form larger mining corporations because they could not testify against whites in court and defend their rights.¡¨ [From ¡§Asians: The Chinese¡¨] Yep (1975) also mentioned some things the white inspector do to the Chinese Immigrants white they were being passed to America: ¡§they tried to trip me up so they could prove I was not my father¡¦ son, but they did not succeed¡K¡¨ P.15. With all these things against the Chinese immigrants, they can¡¦t do anything to defend themselves except for sticking together.

Governments in the late 1800's passed down laws aimed at the Chinese directly. One of the most famous and powerful law against the Chinese was the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882. Otten, Evelyn Holt (1998) shows “If the Chinese left the United States, they need to obtain certifications to re-enter. Congress, moreover, refused State and Federal courts the right to grant citizenship to Chinese resident aliens, although these courts could still deport them” (Page 82-85). Populations of Chinese in the western states decreased dramatically. Another case was Yick Wo v. Hopkins, Yick Wo opened a laundromat like many other Chinese immigrants. But a new law says if any building is built in wood, the owner would get arrested. It sounded reasonable because it was caught on fire, it’ll spread quickly. But many Chinese and only one White woman got arrested, Yick Wo was one of them because he didn’t get a permit to open a laundromat in a wooden building. No White man was arrested for this law and only one White woman got arrested, all the rest was the Chinese. This is clearly discrimination.

One way the Chinese were discriminated and oppressed was that the white men went to the government and made laws and acts that put the Chinese in a disadvantage. The laws made it so hard for the Chinese that they couldn¡¯t even get in or even out the counter without problems. The white men made laws that insulted the Chinese¡¯s religion like cutting their queues off (the long hair on the back of a Chinese persons head). The Chinese exclusion act made sure the Chinese weren¡¯t able to stay in America. ¡°In 1879 an act was passed to limit the entry of Chinese laborers. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act banned the immigration of Chinese labors into the U.S. for ten years and prohibited the naturalization of Chinese.¡±

The Chinese have stuck together to fight against discrimination. The way they got the United States to remove the laws of discrimination against the Chinese was by helping the United States fight the Japanese during World War II. They are strong communities in a few states today. They have fought against laws that discriminated the Chinese. They have become a big part of the United States. A Chinese rapper, Jin tha MC, fights discrimination in his song, “Learn Chinese.” He says “the Chinese should ride the trains for free, shoot, we built the railroads.” In the song, Jin tha MC talks about stereotypes that were made against Chinese people from during that time that are still used today.

White devils or mobs were also oppressed and discriminated the Chinese by hitting, killing and lynching them. The coming of Chinese immigrants angry the white devils because of different language, culture, racism and economical problems of willing to work for lower pays. The white devils and mobs express their angry through violence. One of the examples of violence that the white devil or mob had on Chinese immigrants is massacres. In A Rumbling in the mines, the author Carnes Jim shows the reader how the Chinese were treated by the whites through violence in Rock Spring. He wrote: The mob reassembled at the edge of Chinatown proper and hastily mapped out attack. Squads of 8 to 10 dispersed into the maze-like streets and passageways. They smashed windows, rammed doors and hit the frightened residents into the street, shaking little mercy for women or children. The safest route of escape was southeast across creek toward Burning Mountain. Many of Chinese were barefoot. Most fled with no more possessions than the thin cotton work suits on their back. The rioters stole any visible jewelry or other valuables and beat or shot or released the owners as they saw fit. (54&55) Even if the mobs or white devil get arrested they will because of a law and get freed again. That law is about a free white citizen of this State was convicted of murder upon the testimony of Chinese witnesses. Since the Chinese cannot testimony against the whites then there wouldn¡¯t be any evidence to prove their crime. It¡¯s just not fair to the Chinese immigrants that get killed.

The American hated the Chinese so much that they went after them, as in kill, hurt, etc. But the bosses protected the Chinese, just so they can return back to jobs! So the mop/the group of angry American went to China because they know that’s their home. They sailed all the way to Hong Kong just to get revenge on the Chinese. So they burned up china to get revenge like in “A Rumbling in the Mines” page 56, “As Hong Kong went up in flames, a few more Chinese scramble out of hiding, their head wrapped in blankets to protect them from the smoke.” And when the Chinese in American asked for help, the selfish American didn’t give a shit! All they care about is his stupid dumb rail road tracks!!!

The Natives took advantage of the Chinese because they were new to the country. Scriabine (1995) indicates that "They feared by white laborers because they would work for less money" (pg.2). the Chinese got pay lower wages than the Natives because the Chinese doesn't know anything about America and their jobs and wages. To the Chinese, having a job and getting pay is better than being in China and doing nothing. When the Chinese was in trouble in Rock Springs, Wyoming Territory, Carnes (1995) demonstrated that "They heard reports of trouble, but most fully expected the compnay to step in and protect them as it always had" (pg.54). That quote indicates that even though the Chinese had work for the company, the company only wants the Chinese sojourners skills and hard work. The company only wants the work done by as low wages as possible. So if there was a big mob attacking the Chinese, the company wouldn't care because the Chinese are done building the railroads. Chinese immigrants came to America hoping to find gold because of the rumor bout gold falling out of the sky. They came to America not only did not find any gold, they were also being discriminated. They were tricked by the Natives into immigratings to the U.S.

The United States made laws against Chinese people. It came up with the Chinese Exclusion act that did not allow Chinese people to enter into the US without a permit. That made the Chinese population in the US go down. It also sent out a law saying that Chiense do not have the rights to testify against a white person in court. Chinese people had no power. Finally, if a Chinese person is found without a legal document (even if it is at home), that person is deported away from the US.

In the 1800’s many Chinese immigrants had been discriminate4d for who they were. Many whites were being fired and were replaced by Chinese. Many angry mobs went out to kill them. But the Chinese couldn’t fight back because laws were passed that made it impossible for the Chinese to even talk back. The Chinese stuck together and there were organizations helping the Chinese. But the Chinese stuck together and there was organizations formed. But the Chinese organizations did not have as much power as the Government. Today the Chinese has become a very vibrant community in the United States today.
